1.  Our Commitment to Accessibility

At Studio One Dance Academy, we believe that movement and the joy of dance should be accessible to everyone. This principle extends to our online presence. We are committed to ensuring that our website ( www.studioonedance.co.za ) is accessible to people with disabilities, including those who use assistive technologies such as screen readers, keyboard navigation, voice control software, and other adaptive tools.

We view digital accessibility as an ongoing commitment and continue to work towards a website that can be used with the same ease and enjoyment by all visitors, regardless of ability.

2.  What Web Accessibility Means

Web accessibility means designing and developing websites so that people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and neurological disabilities, can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with web content effectively.

An accessible website allows visitors with disabilities to browse the site with the same, or a comparable, level of ease and enjoyment as other visitors. Accessibility is achieved through both the technical capabilities of the system on which the site operates and through the implementation of assistive technologies and accessible design principles.

3.  Applicable Accessibility Standard

Our website has been developed and adapted in accordance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). We are working towards conformance at Level AA, which addresses the most common and significant accessibility barriers for people with disabilities.

While South Africa does not yet have a mandatory statutory web accessibility framework equivalent to those in some other jurisdictions, we have voluntarily adopted the WCAG 2.1 AA standard as our benchmark, in line with international best practice and in the spirit of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, which enshrines the right to equality and dignity for all persons.

4.  Accessibility Adjustments on This Website

As part of our ongoing effort to improve accessibility, we have implemented or are working to implement the following adjustments on our website:

4.1  Structure and Navigation

  • Defined clear and consistent heading structures on all pages to aid screen reader navigation

  • Set the natural language of the site and its pages to English (South Africa) so that assistive technologies can render content correctly

  • Established a logical and meaningful content order on all pages, independent of visual presentation

  • Implemented consistent and descriptive navigation menus across all pages

  • Ensured all pages include skip-navigation links to allow keyboard users to bypass repetitive content

4.2  Visual Design and Content

  • Implemented colour combinations that meet the minimum colour contrast ratios required under WCAG 2.1 AA (4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text and graphical elements)

  • Added descriptive alternative text to all meaningful images; decorative images are appropriately marked so they are ignored by screen readers

  • Ensured text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality

  • Avoided the use of colour as the sole means of conveying information

  • Reduced or controlled the use of motion, animations, and auto-playing content

4.3  Multimedia and Documents

  • Provided captions or transcripts for video and audio content where available

  • Ensured that all downloadable documents (e.g. timetables, enrolment forms) are published in accessible formats where possible

  • Avoided using content that flashes more than three times per second, in line with seizure-safety guidelines

4.4  Forms and Interactive Elements

  • Ensured all form fields on the website are labelled clearly and programmatically associated with their labels

  • Provided clear error messages and instructions to assist users in completing online forms

  • Ensured all interactive controls are accessible via keyboard alone, without requiring a mouse

4.5  Keyboard and Assistive Technology Compatibility

  • The website's contents have been adapted to work with assistive technologies, including screen readers (such as NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver) and keyboard-only navigation

  • Focusable elements display a clearly visible focus indicator when navigated by keyboard

5.  Declaration of Partial Compliance: Third-Party Content

Certain pages or elements of our website include or rely on content provided by third-party platforms and service providers, including but not limited to embedded social media feeds, video hosting platforms, online payment processors, and booking or registration tools. The accessibility of such content is outside our direct control.

We therefore declare partial compliance with the WCAG 2.1 AA standard in respect of such third-party content. We are committed to selecting third-party services that take accessibility seriously and will continue to advocate for accessible third-party tools.

Where we are aware of specific pages affected by third-party content limitations, these include:

  • Social media feed embeds (Instagram / Facebook)
